The Galaxy A12 is one of Samsung's most affordable smartphones, so it's not surprising that it's not lightning fast.

However, even by the standards of other inexpensive smartphones, the phone is exceedingly hard to operate. You know you're in trouble when the keyboard lags throughout the first setup process.

Review Of The Samsung Galaxy A12 - Design:

While there are a few telltale clues that the Galaxy A12 isn't a Samsung flagship, it does have a premium appearance.

The phone's 6.5-inch screen dominates the front, with bezels that are only a few millimeters thick all the way around and double in size around the chin.


Design and Construction:

The Galaxy A12 is a huge plastic slab with a height of 164 mm and a width of 75.8 mm. It's a big phone, but not too big compared to the normal current Android phone. A 6.5-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels is located on the front.

Although the lesser resolution doesn't look great when stretched out to 6.5 inches, there aren't many phones in this price bracket with 1080p displays (in the US, anyway). 

A notch for the front-facing camera is located above the display (Samsung refers to this design as "Infinity-V"), and a thin bezel is located below the screen.

The phone's sides and back are made of the same plastic, although the upper back area of the Galaxy A12 has a textured finish.

The microSD and SIM card slots are located on the phone's left side. 

The Galaxy A12 accepts SD cards up to 1TB in size, but Samsung disables Android's adoptable storage function on all of its phones, meaning SD cards can only be used to store files, not apps.

Volume controls and a fingerprint sensor that also serves as the power button can be found on the right side. The sensor detects my finger swiftly, but it's difficult to reach if you're holding the Galaxy A12 in your left hand.

Finally, there's a USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone socket, and a single speaker on the phone's bottom. 

The speaker is horrible, as you'd expect from a low-cost phone. The Samsung Galaxy A12 can be charged at up to 15W through USB Type-C, and Samsung includes a 15W wall adapter in the box.


If you've recently used a Samsung phone, you won't be surprised by the Galaxy A12's software. 

The Galaxy A12 is one of numerous devices featuring the significantly stripped-down 'One UI Core' experience, which is essentially identical to the One UI experience seen on Samsung's other handsets.

Good Lock, Bixby (including Bixby Routines), Samsung Pay, and Secure Folder are not supported by One UI Core. 

Microsoft's Your Phone app's app mirroring feature is also unavailable, but you can still read notifications on a Windows 10 PC. 

You can't utilize the Samsung DeX desktop environment, but many smartphones running regular One UI can't because it requires more processing power than the Galaxy A12.

Battery Life And Performance:

The phone opens most apps in a few seconds, but there's so much latency with animations and scrolling that it's a pain to use most of the time.

Due to slowness, my usual keyboard was losing some of my key presses; switching to Gboard is a significant improvement. In this price range, bottom-of-the-barrel performance isn't uncommon, but it doesn't make the experience any less tedious.

The Galaxy A12 is less expensive than all of those phones, so expect poorer performance. 

However, the Galaxy A32 (which retails for $280 but is currently on sale for $205) provides a far superior experience than the Galaxy A12. 

The phone's MediaTek Helio P35 processor and 3GB RAM aren't up to the task.

At the very least, the battery life is adequate. For most individuals, the huge 5,000mAh battery should last two days of normal use. So, if you charge your phone every night, you'll almost certainly never run out of juice.

SAMSUNG A12 Camera:

Only three of the Galaxy A12's four rear cameras can take photos: the 48MP main lens (which combines images down to 16MP), a 5MP ultra-wide, and a 2MP macro. The final camera is a 2MP depth sensor that should aid the other lenses. Finally, there's an 8MP front-facing camera for selfies.

Although the Galaxy A12 has a decent main lens, the interesting peripheral options aren't always in good shape. 

Because the macro lens only has 2MP, it took several efforts to get the relatively clear sample image below. There isn't a dedicated night mode on the Galaxy A12, so you'll have to rely on trial and error outside of daylight hours.

While all phones add a little magic after you click the shutter button, the photographs captured on the Galaxy A12 were frequently noticeably better than what the camera app showed.

When I hit the shutter button on the low-light image below, for example, it appeared substantially darker, and neither image in the comparison looked as clean as what you see. 

Most of the time, this turned out to be a pleasant surprise, but it does make estimating your shot a little more difficult. As you can see in the sample surrounding my hair, Portrait mode struggled with edge detection.

The ultra-wide camera's 5MP resolution generates photographs that are noticeably inferior than the main lens, and the 2MP macro lens is no exception. They'll do for a Snapchat or Instagram story now and then, but that's about it.

The device's screen dimension is, 164 × 75.8 × 8.9 millimeters (6.46 × 2.96 × 0.35 inches), and has a Screen size of 6.5 inches.
